Black History in Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture: Exploring the legacy of racism in molding our profession

February 21, 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM

The legacy of racism in the judicial system and wealth access in the U.S. is well known. However, racism has been a critical factor across all aspects of U.S. culture and economic systems. Veterinary medicine and agriculture are not any different.

Some of the factors that have marginalized urban populations are amplified in rural areas and in professions like veterinary medicine in the U.S. Access to credit, access to land ownership, economic and social marginalization and many other injustices associated with systemic racism have been barriers to entry.

We are hosting a discussion with Dr. Theressa Cooper, Assistant Dean for Diversity, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Iowa State University, about the role racism has played in U.S. agriculture and veterinary medicine and invite you to join us to bring your own thoughts and perspective to the conversation.
