Bruk Woldegabriel - CFANS Study Abroad Program

Spring Break 2016

When I first decided to be a part of this study abroad experience, it was with the thought of gaining a first person perspective by meeting with people who are working directly in the field and gain knowledge from their hands-on field experience.

I was under the impression that I was only going to learn from the professionals in International Development, and I could not have been more wrong.

This trip showed me that, in the context of development, it’s the individual in every society that creates the change in his/her community, by themselves becoming the change that they want to see in their community.

This trip further solidified my commitment to working professionally in the field of international development, and I am now looking into other opportunities to work in this field which I’ve grown to be passionate about.

In addition to that, I have been able to connect with two professors in a way I’ve never experienced while at the U, met five incredible students who I know will be my lifelong friends, and met friends in South Africa I will undoubtedly reconnect with as soon as I get the chance to go back!
