The CFANS Student Board invites you to attend this informal forum for the chance to connect and share your ideas with deans and department heads on topics such as undergraduate curriculum, study spaces on campus, campus safety, and any issues that are important to you as a student. SciSpark 2016: Women in Science
Monday, March 28

St. Paul Student Center
Enjoy succinct takes on topics ranging from sustainable food production to remote sensing and big data in agriculture. Twelve scientists, all women, across three colleges (CFANS, CBS, and VetMed) will present 5 minute lightning talks for SciSpark 2016. Refreshments available starting at 5 p.m.; food and conversation to follow. This event is free, and everyone is invited to attend! RSVP:

Graduating this spring? The annual U of M GradFest event is your "one-stop" source for graduation information, services and products. Pick up a cap and gown, order announcements, portraits, etc. Explore dozens of graduation-related exhibits and post-commencement options such as the U of M Alumni Association and health care plans. Classes Without Quizzes: Attend or Volunteer!

This annual, public event is a casual way to hear about the incredible research going on at CFANS, and to see a variety of CFANS faculty in action. Invite your family, attend with friends, or volunteer! (Volunteers get free admission and meals.) Attend any presentation that interests you. This year's topics include grocers in rural Minnesota, cows and technology, recreation on the North Shore, Midwestern hops, and more. Learn more & register. Sponsored by the CFANS Alumni Society.

Scholarly Excellence in Equity and Diversity (SEED) Awards
Apply by: April 1, by 4:30 p.m.
The U of M Office for Equity and Diversity’s Scholarly Excellence in Equity and Diversity (SEED) Awards program honors and acknowledges students from diverse backgrounds who are doing outstanding work at the University of Minnesota, both in and out of the classroom. Awards range from $1000-$3000. See application and details.

Enter the Agtastic Idea Challenge for a Chance to win $1,000
Do you have an innovative idea to advance ag, food or natural resources? Pitch your "Agtastic" idea - in 2 minutes or less - to a panel of real investors and industry veterans at the Agtastic Idea Challenge on Friday, April 1. Attend the final highly interactive brainstorming session for training on how to pitch your idea on Saturday, March 26 from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. in Coffey Hall:

Coca-Cola Art of Recycling Competition

Student Unions & Activities in partnership with Coca-Cola will be hosting the Art of Recycling event to showcase sustainability efforts on campus. The event will include an exhibit of all Art of Recycling competition participants, musical performances, sustainability fair, and giveaways. Enter an original piece for a chance to win great prizes! Present at the 2016 Sustainability Symposium & Win an iPad Mini!

Institute on the Environment (IonE)
The Sustainability Symposium showcases student research and creative work in categories of: posters, lightning talks, art, multimedia and more. Prizes are offered for best communicating sustainability as well as peer reviews from participants and attendees. Submit your research or creative work proposal online by March 21.

CFANS Study Abroad - Deadline Extended to April 1

The application deadline has been extended to April 1 on three short-term study abroad programs:

  • France: Earn four credits in Sustainable Food Chains and French, May 24 – June 24
  • Bahamas: Earn two credits in Tropical Marine Biology, August 3 – 11
  • Mexico: Earn two credits in International Crop Field Research, August 4 – 11

Earn academic credit while traveling to a unique international destination. A few spaces remain on these programs so don’t wait to apply! For more information contact the Office of International Programs in CFANS at

Proven Winners Horticulture Scholarship - $5,000
Apply by: April 1
At least three scholarships will be awarded annually for innovations in plant breeding, horticultural marketing, and grower excellence. Applicants must be at least a sophomore and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. See eligibility and application details.

Frances Sylvia Zverina Scholarship - $10,000
Apply by: April 1
Awarded by the Western Reserve Herb Society. For sophomores and juniors studying horticulture or a related field, and whose horticultural career goals involve teaching/ research, sustainable local agriculture or work in the public or nonprofit sector. See details and application.

STEM Scholarships - $2,500-$5,000
Apply by: April 1
The Minnesota High Tech Foundation (MHTF) awards $5,000 and $10,000 scholarships to Minnesota undergraduate students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines. These awards can include internship opportunities at MHTA member companies. Applicants must be pursuing an undergraduate degree in a STEM field or in STEM teaching and must have at least sophomore standing. Apply at the Minnesota High Tech Association website.

Minnesota Cooperative Education Foundation Edward Slettom Cooperative Leadership Scholarship - $750
Apply by: April 1
The Edward Slettom Cooperative Leadership Scholarship is available to Minnesota college students who wish to pursue careers relating to cooperatives. The award is based on scholastic achievement, leadership, and an ability to contribute to co-ops in the future. See the application.

Apply for Sigma Xi Membership & Scholarships
Apply by: April 8
Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, U of M Chapter is inviting application for membership as well as nominations for student cash awards and prize opportunities. Membership requires nomination by two Sigma Xi members. Complete the application form online, or contact with questions.

Land O'Lakes Scholarships for Transfer Students - $5,000
Apply by: April 15
CFANS is offering multiple scholarships worth $5000 each, through the Land O'Lakes Multifunctional Agricultural and Food Systems Scholarship. The scholarship is potentially renewable for a second year, provided recipients participate in the co-curriculum program and maintain a 3.0 GPA. This scholarship is open to any student transferring into CFANS for the 2016-17 academic year who is pursuing one of the following majors: Agricultural Education, Agricultural and Food Business Management, Agricultural Communication and Marketing, Environmental Science, Policy and Management, Food Systems, and Plant Science.
