September alumni trivia question:

Fall bonfires are coming up fast and we want to test your pest-deterring knowledge! There is an all-natural way to prevent mosquito bites by using a natural herb, which CFANS Professor and Extension Horticulturist Mary Meyer has given her knowledge on recently. Which plant is it?

a) Lemon Grass
b) Rosemary
c) Sweet Grass
d) Basil

Answer:
c) Sweet Grass

Native Americans have used sweet grass for centuries for ceremonial purposes and weaving. Some hung sweet grass in their dwellings and wore it in their clothing to keep mosquitoes away. Now the U. S. Department of Agriculture says a chemical in sweet grass works as well as DEET insect repellent. Read more on the subject and hear from Mary Meyer here!
