May 11, 2020

The Office of the President announced the 2020 recipients of the President’s Student Leadership and Service Award, as well as the recipients of the Donald R. Zander Alumni Award, the James A. Johnson Scholarship Award, and the Mary A. McEvoy Award.

Three CFANS students received awards:

  • Headshot of Entomology PhD student Michelle Boone.
Entomology PhD student Michelle Boone received both the Mary A. McEvoy Award for Public Service and Leadership and the President's Student Leadership & Service Award. "I'm most proud of my leadership experience as the chair of the CFANS Graduate Student Board. My team organized social events and disbursed grants to graduate students. We also ensured that the graduate student voice was heard by CFANS administration and alumni. I'm proud of my team and our accomplishments," Michelle said of her contributions to the University that led to her receiving two awards.

  • Headshot of Applied Plant Science graduate student Austin Dobbels.
Applied Plant Science PhD student Austin Dobbels received the President's Student Leadership & Service Award for his research around bringing agriculture into the modern era. "Agriculture is high-tech, sophisticated and cool. In 2019, I enjoyed reaching out to the MN community at several events to talk about how drones can be used in agriculture. Families had the opportunity to simulate flying drones and 'visit' a soybean field through virtual reality!" Austin said.

  • Headshot of Agricultural and Food Business Management undergraduate student Sierra Williamson.
Agricultural and Food Business Management bachelor's student Sierra Williamson received the President's Student Leadership & Service Award for her work on the Campus Brew Pub. "Campus Brew Pub project is a grassroots initiative that strategically aligns departments to create a university-produced beer. This initiative has the potential to engage departments in the beer production supply chain, enrich the campus community by providing a social gathering space, and create new opportunities for branding and revenue possibilities," Sierra said.

These awards honor outstanding students for their invaluable leadership and service to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and the community. CFANS congratulates these exemplary student leaders, both those from our college and those from across the university.
