CFANS Picnic goes Zero Waste

On Tuesday, September 11, 2018 CFANS held their annual Picnic on the Plaza to welcome students back to campus after a long summer away. As usual, students helped themselves to turkey and veggie sandwiches as well as everyone's favorite corn on the cob with cajun seasoning. However, new to the event this year was its Zero Waste theme.

All napkins, cups, plates, and utensils were made of compostable material to mitigate the college's contribution to landfills. At several different locations on the Ruttan Hall Plaza the University's Recycling Center had organics bins ready for the student's waste. Accompanying the organics bins were trash and bottle recycl

ing bins to account for any outside waste.

To make sure all the picnic-goer's knew where to dispose of all their organic waste, CFANS enlisted the help of one of the University's student groups, the Environmental Student Association (ESA). Stationed at the several waste bin stations on the plaza, volunteers from ESA helped aide students and faculty in disposing of their compostable waste in the organics bins and educate about the overall Zero Waste theme of the picnic.

"We were so happy that Mary Buschette from CFANS reached out to our club to help," said Lucas Fluegel, ESA treasurer. "I thought it was a great success and everyone who attended learned a little more about composting!"
