Carol Ishimaru Honored as AAAS Fellow

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has chosen University of Minnesota Plant Pathology professor Carol Ishimaru as a 2018 Fellow. This lifetime honor was bestowed upon 416 AAAS members in recognition of their extraordinary achievements in advancing science.

Fellows are selected from a broad variety of scientific disciplines and possess diverse accomplishments that include pioneering research, leadership within their field, teaching and mentoring, fostering collaborations and advancing public understanding of science.

Ishimaru’s current research is directed to determining the genome sequence of the bacterial ring rot pathogen, Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. sepedonicus (Cms) and applying that information in the seed industry. Ishimaru’s long-term research goal is to identify the basis for pathogenicity in Cms. Identifying the genes affecting pathogenicity could lead to a better understanding of how this pathogen persists in apparently healthy plants.

Announced November 27, the Fellows will be recognized at the 2019 AAAS Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. Recipients receive an official certificate and the AAAS Fellows’ gold and blue rosette pin. The colors represent the fields of science and engineering, respectively.
