Staff members of the Minnesota House and Senate visited to get a closer look at the work done on the St. Paul campus. Included in the visit were tours of and opportunities to visit with experts in the Bee Lab, Forever Green Initiative field plots, bio-safety lab, Food Science and Nutrition pilot lab, veterinary diagnostic laboratory, and the Raptor Center.

CFANS Department of Animal Science Assistant Professor Andres Gomez, will be a part of short documentary that airs on HBO Friday, October 6, 6:30 and 10:30 p.m. The VICE 82 documentary is the HBO segment that features Gomez’s work with microbiome research.

The Department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology (FWCB) 2017 Kolshorn Lecture and Awards Ceremony, Sept. 18, honored John Magnuson, B.S. ‘56 and M.S. ‘58, with the Distinguished Alumni Award, several students, and featured Marie-Josee Fortin, Canada Research Chair in Spatial Ecology from the University of Toronto. Magnuson offered special thanks to the influence of mentor Lloyd Smith.

CFANS Dairy Cattle Judging Teams competed in the All-American Dairy Show Collegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest in Harrisburg, Penn., and the Accelerated Genetics/Select Sires Collegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest in Viroqua, Wisc., last week and placed second overall in both contests.

Becca Nash, Associate Director of the Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center (MAISRC) has been appointed Director of the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR). The LCCMR oversees and distributes approximately $50 million to environmental projects annually through the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund.

CFANS hosted sixteen young women (grades 7-10) to participate in the first Gopher Girls in Agricultural STEM Scholars Program on the St. Paul campus of the University of Minnesota, August 16-17. The program enlisted researchers and professors from across the agricultural disciplines to engage participants in the wonders of agricultural science. Participants learned about plant genetics and breeding, polymer chemistry, animal science, drones in agriculture, and more.

Love trees and love people? You can learn the basics of tree care to steward your community’s trees with CFANS Tree Care Advisor Program (TCA). Sponsored by the Urban Forestry Outreach, Research and Extension (UFORE) lab in the Department of Forest Resources, TCA is a program that trains volunteers how to care for existing trees, how to selectively plant new ones, and how to engage with their community while doing so.
