anneAnne Struffert says she wants to “leave this world a better, cleaner place for future generations,” by providing farmers and non-farmers with reliable information on how nitrogen leaching is affecting them and solutions they can use to mitigate the problem.

Nitrogen is vital to healthy crop yields in the Corn Belt; Struffert’s research looks at how different ways of applying urea, a common fertilizer, affects Minnesota’s sandy soils where corn is planted.

“I’m seeking to understand if there is any way to improve the best management practices for urea application on sandy soils as well as if enhanced efficiency nitrogen products have any potential to help control nitrate leaching, while maintaining comparable yields to granular urea,” she says.
