Mite Management Clinic

University of Minnesota Bee Squad, helping the Twin Cities area foster healthy bee populations
Varroa destructor is one of the biggest problems you will need to manage in your hive. Learn from the experts how to properly deal with these pests. In the first half of the class, you and other beekeepers will learn about this parasitic mite, including its biology, and review your management options. The second half of class will take place in the Arboretum Apiary where you will observe how mites are monitored via the powdered sugar roll test. Management techniques, including drone comb replacement and organic miticide use, will also be demonstrated. You will leave equipped with practical ways to deal with this destructive pest. REQUIRED EQUIPMENT: Students must bring their own protective gear and wear a veil in the Apiary.

Ride your bike, bring your own picnic, and enjoy a relaxing afternoon on the St. Paul campus. Our astronomy educators will bring out specially outfitted telescopes so you can safely view the biggest yellow dwarf star around--our Sun! Staff will also highlight some of the exciting developments happening at our new museum and planetarium, under construction right next to the fields!

Outdoor games such as soccer balls, bubbles, or even DIY insect houses are welcome (not supplied). More details TBA.

Weather: Observing may not occur in the case of inclement weather such as rain, overcast skies, or high heat indexes.

BBE Scholarship Golf Outing

Support students in Biosystems and Bioproducts Engineering (BBE) by golfing to raise scholarship funds! The BBE Department is partnering with North Central PIMA and Lake States TAPPI to host a golf outing where proceeds will support BBE student scholarships. 

Join colleagues and friends on Thursday, June 22 at the U of M Les Bolstad Golf Course on the St. Paul campus. Lunch and tee-times start at 11:30am, followed by prizes, and drinks/appetizers.

U of M Alumni Night at Minnesota United

Soil Health Field Day

Crop producers and other agricultural professionals can see the latest in soil heath, cover crop varieties and management, and relay cropping:

  • See how different cover crops affect soil structure and function in a soil pit
  • Compare 11 cover crop varieties
  • See demonstrations of relay cropping with Camelina and soybean

14th annual Golf Scramble for Scholarships

The CFANS Alumni Society will be hosting its 14th annual Golf Scramble fundraiser on Friday, July 7 at the University of Minnesota Les Bolstad Golf Course. Over the past 13 years, this event has raised nearly $350,000 for scholarships for CFANS students. You can participate by golfing, donating an item to the silent auction, volunteering at the event, or making a contribution to the scholarship fund!

Horticulture Night

Horticulture Display Garden, West Central Research and Outreach Center

Horticulture Night offers a wide variety of demonstrations, presentations, and tours; most are offered twice throughout the event. Typically held in the last Thursday of July, Horticulture Night gives visitors the opportunity to view annual flowers, plants, shrubs and trees under regional conditions as well as take in educational presentations. It is estimated that nearly 1,600 people attend the free event.

Horticulture Night is free and open to the public.

NCROC 2017 Visitor's Day

The University of Minnesota North Central Research and Outreach Center’s (NCROC) and University of Minnesota Extension, Visitor's Day committee has set Thursday, August 24, 2017 as the date for the 2017 Annual Visitor’s Day. The event will begin at 3 p.m. and wind down at 7 p.m.

Visitors will be able to learn about all research departments and the University of Minnesota Extension on tours or at informational booths, located throughout the site. Research at NCROC is very diverse and includes Agronomy, Animal Science, Entomology, Forest Genetics, Forestry Management, Horticulture, and Tourism.

Join the Healthy Foods, Healthy Lives (HFHL) Institute on September 18-20, 2017 at Mystic Lake Casino and Hotel in Prior Lake, MN for this annual conference that brings together tribal officials, researchers, practitioners, and others to discuss the current state of Indigenous and academic scientific knowledge about Native nutrition and food science, and identify new areas of work. An informal evening reception will be held on September 17 for those attending--please plan your travel arrangements accordingly. Registration will open in May 2017.
