FScN Retired Professor Ed Zottola Passes Away

Retired Food Science and Nutrition Professor Edmund Anthony Zottola, age 85, passed away peacefully from complications due to Alzheimer’s on October 4. Zottola worked at the University of Minnesota for 31 years as the Extension food microbiologist.

Ball uses CFANS experiences in job as city forester

Emily Ball ’02, Urban and Community Forestry, knows that a career is often like a jungle gym, not a ladder. She also knows the value in seeking jobs that gave her transferable skills that could serve her in any position. She now works as City Forester for the City of Lakeville, a job that was preceded by a host of diverse experiences. Like many students in our programs, she “found” urban forestry in an introductory class in which she heard Professor Gary Johnson speak. After that, she knew urban forestry was right for her.

Wilson joins University of Minnesota- Extension

Melissa Wilson ‘12 joins the Department of Soil, Water, and Climate as the Extension manure management and water quality specialist. Wilson will be working with farmers across the state to effectively manage and use manure in a way that makes sense economically, safely, and keeping water quality challenges in mind. She'll also be conducting research and inspiring graduate students.

Wingfield: Biosecurity depends on collaborations

Michael Wingfield ‘83 is a worldwide leader in tree disease biology whose thirty-year career has been dedicated to researching tree pests and pathogens. Before accepting the 2016 University of Minnesota Distinguished Leadership Award for Internationals last month, Wingfield gave a presentation emphasizing that future biosecurity depends upon engaging and collaborating with politicians and social scientists more than ever.

Frederiksen donates Jakob Eriksson Prize

On June 20th the Department of Plant Pathology welcomed alumni and friends to celebrate Richard Frederiksen '55 '57 '61. During the event, Dr. Frederiksen donated his 1998 Jakob Eriksson Prize to Plant Pathology.

Spotlight: Kelsey Gunderson

Following her older sister’s footsteps to the University of Minnesota, Agricultural Education, Communication and Marketing (AECM) alum Kelsey Gunderson '13 explored the options of the AECM program. “The agriculture industry was enticing, and AECM allowed for different opportunities to pursue after graduation,” she said.
