Sjostrom '09 to speak at CFANS Commencement

CFANS 2017 Undergraduate Commencement ceremony speaker Alise Sjostrom '09 (B.S. Agricultural Industries and Marketing)  represents the enriching possibilities for a CFANS graduate as a rising star in the growing specialized food market. In July 2014, Sjostrom launched Redhead Creamery, an artisan cheese maker, located on the dairy farm where she grew up. The dairy herd and the cheese company are jointly owned by Sjostrom, her husband Lucas Sjostrom '09 '16 (B.S. & M.S. Animal Science), and her parents Jerry and Linda Jennisen. The cheeses, some of which are named after family members, are gaining solid respect and steady consumption within the boutique cheese market. The facility is an example of an innovative source-to-retail operation, with a tunnel that runs from the milk house to the cheese plant, which runs milk directly from the milking parlor to the pasteurizing tank. Redhead Creamery made use of an Agricultural Utilization Research Institute (AURI) cost-share program and resources. Education about dairy production is one of the business goals, and a commercial kitchen and meeting space make the creamery more than a retail destination. Sjostrom's CFANS-solid stewardship principles are also evidenced by her business being recognized by Minnesota Governor Dayton for its clean water practices.
