- The CFANS community is deeply saddened by the sudden death of Christian Thill, an associate professor of horticultural science, on August 8. Thill was a potato breeder, plant geneticist, and highly respected scientist and instructor. He traveled the world to share his research and passion for collaborative efforts in the development of new potato breeds. He was especially excited about two of his recently developed varieties, including MonDak Gold, which was released for commercial production in 2014. Read the full obituary.
- Arthur P. Fischer passed away July 18 at the age of 92. Fischer received his bachelor's degree in food science & technology from the University of Minnesota in 1949 and spent a 30 year career with General Mills. He was a life-long Gophers fan and an amazing volunteer. During his retirement, Fischer made 36 trips to Russia and Eastern Europe for Volunteers in Overseas Cooperative Assistance and received the President's Call to Service Award in 2009; he also received the Volunteer of the Year award from Second Harvest Food Bank in 2008. A celebration of Art's life was held August 17 on the St. Paul campus for his many contributions to the CFANS community. Read the full obituary.
