- Harlan (Bud) Finney passed away April 29. Bud received his Ph.D. in Soil Science in 1966, and conducted extensive studies of peat types and developed a new soil classification system for organic soils, which became the basis for the organic soil classification system used in the United States. He served in various state and federal positions with Soil Conservation Service from the 60’s to the 80’s and was an adjunct faculty member of the Department of Soil, Water, and Climate from 1966 -1989. Bud played on the Soil Science bowling team for many years, was an avid fisherman and loved gardening and the outdoors.
- Jerrold (Jerry) Tesmer passed away April 13 after a courageous battle with cancer. Jerry served his country in the Vietnam War and graduated from the U of M in 1976 with a B.S. in Agricultural Education, later followed by a Master's in Adult Education ('92). He had recently retired from the U of M Extension with over 27 years as an Agricultural Extension Educator; he served Fillmore, Mower, Winona and Houston counties over the years. His proudest accomplishment was his Farm Safety Day Camp, which grew to serve all fourth-grade students across Fillmore and Houston counties. Jerry served in leadership postitions on numerous boards and was a role model for other Agricultural Extension Educators. He was a beloved family man who will be missed by many.
