Big Ten Ag Alumni Reception
Monday, March 7th, 6:00-8:00 p.m., National Press Club (Washington, D.C.)
In the spirit of institutional cooperation, the Big Ten schools with agricultural programs are once again gathering our alumni and friends on March 7th in the Washington, D.C., area for a special event at the National Press Club! Now in its sixth year, the reception has been a great success with alumni and friends networking across institutions and enjoying one another's company. Other colleges in attending include Michigan State University, The Ohio State University, The Pennsylvania State University, Purdue University, Rutger University, University of Illinois, University of Maryland, University of Minnesota, University of Nebraska, and the University of Wisconsin. Cost is $20 per person, heavy hors d'oeuvres and open bar throughout.

During this hour-long virtual networking event, connect with fellow CFANS community members - alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends - to meet new people, share insights, and get advice. This experience will be a lot like speed networking, only online, allowing you to connect no matter where you are in the world! You can sign in from your home, office, smartphone or tablet. During the event, CFANS community members will join discussion booths to connect with one another. You’ll move through the event in a series of brief, text-based chats of up to 9 minutes. Tuesday-Wednesday, March 15-16, Bethel University - Arden Hills
The Minnesota Shade Tree Short Course (STSC) is a two-day course for everyone involved in urban forestry and arboriculture. The event will be held at Bethel University in Arden Hills March 15 -16. Hundreds of urban forestry professionals from around the country will meet for two full days of sharing research and education and networking with each other. People that come to the STSC are the decision makers for their respective places of employment: tree care companies, property managers, public employees (city, county, state, and federal), utility companies, colleges and universities, and nonprofits. After the STSC, CFANS Alumni are invited to Happy Hour at Grumpy's Bar in Roseville at 4pm on Wednesday, March 16.

This year's featured topic is Cover Crops: Economic and Environmental Management. The Production Agriculture Symposium is organized by graduate students at the University of Minnesota in the departments of Horticulture; Agronomy and Plant Genetics; Water, Soil, and Climate; Plant Pathology; and Ecology, Evolution and Behavior with a faculty advisory committee from the same departments. The symposium seeks to bring together students, growers, crop consultants, and agricultural industry specialists to discuss a theme of relevance to production agriculture in hope, that through knowledge sharing and discussion, new solutions to the world’s pressing food and environmental problems can be found. Join us on Monday, March 28th for super succinct takes on topics ranging from sustainable food production to remote sensing and big data in agriculture. Twelve scientists across three colleges (CFANS, CBS, and VetMed) will present 5 minute lightning talks. Food and conversation to follow. This event is free, and everyone is invited to attend!
Emerging Professionals Network

Join us for the next Emerging Professionals Network event at Lakes and Legends Brewing Co. Don't miss your opportunity to explore this local hot spot! At this special event for University of Minnesota graduates of the last decade, attendees will learn the unique story behind Lakes and Legends from co-founder, Special Event Producer (Red Bull Crashed Ice Saint Paul, Red Bull Flugtag Twin Cities and Red Bull Illume Minneapolis) and UMD alumnus, Derrick Taylor. Guests will also receive a complimentary beverage of choice and light bites, all while networking with fellow Gophers.

Speed Networking is a great opportunity for successful graduates and professionals from around the Twin Cities to meet and share their career experiences with current students. Unsure what speed networking is? Think speed dating with a professional twist. The speed networking program is divided into six 10-minute sessions. Groups of 2-4 students will join a professional at their table to introduce themselves, talk about their career interests, ask questions, and get advice. Every 10 minutes, the students will move to a different professional for another round of networking. Students will receive information about the professionals in attendance prior to the event. This annual half-day learning event was created in 2002 to showcase the ways that research by CFANS faculty affects the daily lives of Minnesotans. This is a fun, informal outreach event that appeals to many audiences: alumni, general public, current and prospective college students, families, youth K-6 (Kids' Edition) - anyone who is curious about the latest research coming out of CFANS! The 2016 program will feature the latest research from CFANS scientists, including keynote speaker Jay Bell, a professor in the Department of Soil, Water and Climate who will be speaking on the topic of "The 3Ms of Soils: Minnesota, the Moon and Mars". Breakout sessions will include a wide variety of topics: groceries in rural Minnesota, cows and technology, recreation on the North Shore, midwestern hops, and more. Learn more on our website.

In 1916, a tradition began on the St. Paul Campus; 100 years later the tradition continues during the 2016 community-building, campus-wide event known as Minnesota Royal. It is a week full of events that unite students, faculty, community members, and alumni in celebration of fun and agriculture at the University of Minnesota. You are invited to attend Showmanship, the Alumni BBQ, and the MN Royal Centennial Social on April 16! Stay updated via the Minnesota Royal Facebook page.
