More than nine percent of Americans have met criteria for a drug or alcohol use disorder in the past year. With rates this high, addiction has touched the lives of many. Addiction is implicated in most major mental health, physical health, and social problems and therefore has broad implications for public health and safety. Addiction is a confusing and even a bewildering human behavior making it important to challenge myths and misconceptions. Addiction is similar to other chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or asthma, but it is different. Addiction could be compared to an allergy… but only to a point. Addiction is like other mental illnesses, but, again, is unique onto itself. To make things more challenging, popular culture can provide confusing pictures of addiction and recovery in music lyrics and movie themes. This webinar will discuss these issues including criteria for diagnosis, recommended treatment approaches, and the nature of addiction recovery.
