Royal Heins Receives Inaugural Horticultural Science Distinguished Alumnus Award

When Royal Heins (Ph.D. Horticultural Science ’78) was first starting graduate school, he made a promise to himself that he would continue to be an active part of the floriculture industry until the very last day of his career. With that in mind from day one, Heins became a faculty member at Michigan State University. After retiring he established a vegetative stock farm in Guatemala with two partners and today continues to consult for greenhouse growers across the country. This spring he will receive the inaugural Horticultural Science Distinguished Alumnus Award for his accomplishments and present the Kermit Olson Memorial Lecture. Learn more about Royal Heins here

Theresa Twohey: Midwest Dairy Integrated Communication Program Manager

Theresa Twohey (B.S. Agricultural Education-Leadership and Communication '13) was hired as an Integrated Communication Program Manager for the Midwest Dairy Association. Prior to joining the Midwest Dairy staff she was the Director of Communication and Marketing for the Minnesota Pork Producers Association. Theresa will focus on developing content that inspires consumer confidence in on-farm practices. Theresa grew up on a dairy farm and was active in the Gopher Dairy Club and the University of Minnesota Dairy Judging Team. "I am excited to be back in the dairy industry," said Twohey. Theresa is also currently pursuing her M.A. in Strategic Communications at the University of Minnesota.

CFANS hosts Thailand Reunion

CFANS International Programs and Alumni Relations hosted a gathering to celebrate 10 years of the Thailand: Tiger Conservation and Vertebrate Field Methods study abroad program on Nov. 10 in Coffey Hall. A visit from Thai program partner Achara Simcharoen provided the perfect opportunity for a reunion. Along with program leaders Dave Smith and Francie Cuthbert, more than 30 program alums and current class members shared favorite memories and highlighted the multiple personal and profession impacts of the program. To date 140 students have participated in the program. The current cohort will depart in January. More details and pictures on the CFANS website.

Department of Entomology-Hodson Alumni Award-Call for Nominations

The Department of Entomology, College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences at the University of Minnesota, is proud to announce a call for nominations for the 2017 Hodson Graduate Alumni Award.

The Hodson Graduate Alumni Award in the Department of Entomology, College of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences at the University of Minnesota was established in 1998 in memory of Dr. Alexander C. Hodson, Department Head from 1960-1974. This Award is intended to recognize and honor an outstanding alumna or alumnus of the Department of Entomology. The Award is presented annually during the Department’s Honors Day, which pays tribute to the achievements of students in the Entomology Graduate Program.

Nominations will be accepted at any time, but must be received by February 15, 2017 to be considered for the 2017 award. The Award will be presented at the Department Honors Day in May 2017.
