Alumni Experience Study Abroad in Italy

This November, 22 alumni and friends of both CFANS and the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) embarked on an eleven-day excursion to Italy to learn about food, wine and architecture, in an experience similar to that of a typical undergraduate student’s study abroad trip. Alumni Global Learning Adventures can provide the opportunity for alumni and friends to understand and experience what student study abroad programs are like, as well as provide them with the opportunity  to travel and learn in another country. Participant and CFANS alumnus Bob Roesler (‘69 BS, ‘99 MS) of Sherburn, Minnesota, traveled to Italy as part of this year’s program. When asked about his particular experience with the program, Bob stated, “this Global Adventure really helped to open my eyes to both the differences and similarities in our cultures. My comfort zone was stretched. The only disappointment we had was when we ask ourselves why we waited so long to participate in this type of alumni sponsored activity.

One of the program leaders this year was Mike White,  CFANS Associate Dean of Academic Programs and Faculty Affairs, Interim International Programs Director, and Animal Science professor. He brought a professor’s expertise to the experience, thus furthering the educational focus of the journey. Highlights of the itinerary included: a day learning about olive oil production at an olive oil cooperative, time spent with an organic cheese producer learning about Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, a trip to a heritage black pig farm, balsamic vinegar tasting and production, a stop at an Italian sparkling wine producer, and finally a group farewell dinner to discuss the experience and the takeaways of each individual.

The program was coordinated by CFANS Office of Alumni and Constituent Relations and the Office of International Programs and the College of Education and Human Development. We are exploring offering a program to Italy again in October of 2018! If interested in learning more about this program or other adventures like it, please complete this brief form.
