CFANS has undertaken an initiative that focuses on enhancing intercultural competence and the ability to effectively work across difference in all undergraduate students. This multi-year initiative will extend over time to be fully integrated into the CFANS undergraduate experience. Core components of the initiative include the completion of the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) by CFANS student cohorts, integration of intercultural content into all four years of the curriculum in each major, intentional focus on building awareness of the unequal impact of difference, and employing multiple cultural perspectives. CFANS student receives University of Minnesota SEED Award
AARYN WILSON is a junior studying plant science at the Twin Cities campus, a decision that grew out of his love for food and his belief that underrepresented communities should have access to healthy food. His commitment to food justice has led him to be active in community initiatives like Create the Community Meal and the Windom Community Garden. He is also working with Project Sweetie Pie, a North Minneapolis non-profit, to develop a survey to identify gaps and needs for healthy, fresh food and improved nutrition in North Minneapolis.
Workshop focusing on experiences of diverse graduate students
The CFANS Office for Diversity and Inclusion has partnered with International Student and Scholar Services and the Office for Diversity in Graduate Education to create a workshop which focuses on bridging cultural differences between faculty and graduate students of diverse and international backgrounds and creating an inclusive educational environment. The workshop utilizes clips from the video, Breaking Boundaries: Graduate Student Perspectives on Cultural and Ethnic Identity in the Academy, created by the Office for Equity and Diversity, and includes interactive activities and discussion. Departments and units who are interested in initiating or continuing a conversation on this topic you can contact Wendy Plager at firstname.lastname@example.org or 612-624-7953.
