|  |  | Marla Spivak Marla Spivak is a professor in the department of Entomology. Spivak’s
main research area is honey bees. Spivak studies the hygienic behavior
in honey bees as mechanism of disease resistance and as a defense
against parasitic mites. Her research also includes bumblebee rearing,
ecology, pollination, social behavior and mating systems. Spivak
teaches upper-level courses on Honey Bees and Bee Management. Besides
University research and teaching, Spivak also contributes to Extension
activities. Spivak teaches Beekeeping Management and Honey Bee Queen
Rearing short courses during the spring and summer. Spivak currently
serves as the American Association for Professional Apiculturists
(AAPA) Vice President.
