There is significant evidence to suggest that the rapid influx of people to many ancient Maya cities in Mexico and Central America may have, at least in part, contributed the eventual abandonment of those cities – the land simply could not provide the food, water and supplies necessary to support the huge populations. A millennium later, these same lands and resources are again being threatened, not by over populated cities, but by huge resorts and the massive influx of tourists. Travel to the Mexico to study the impact this has on the land and people of the Riviera Maya.
Students will participate in a variety of excursions that will complement the course material. Excursions may include a jungle tour, visits to a cave, ecological park, Mayan ruins, and several snorkeling trips. Students may also meet Mayan elders and participate in indigenous ceremonies.
This program will be led by Mark Bellcourt during the 2008 winter session. Visit the U of M Learning Abroad Center website for further details and application materials.
Over 50 faculty and staff members of the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences and Extension Services at the University of Minnesota participated in a bust tour to the Red Lake Nation Reservation on August 19 and 20, 2008. Red Lake is one of two closed Native American reservations in the country and has full sovereignty over their land. Participants on the bus tour had the opportunity to interact with Tribal community members as well as explore the possibility of ongoing collaborative efforts between the Red Lake community and the University of Minnesota.
