Program Description
Applied Plant Science is a truly interdisciplinary major. Our program draws on the teaching talent, research, and resources of many departments in our College and throughout the University of Minnesota. Our Applied Plant Science major emphasizes consideration of real-world needs in the areas of plant improvement for product quality, safety and security, and the development and management of sustainable plant systems. As a student in our program, you will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for addressing complex problems associated with plant systems managed for the production of food; fiber; energy; chemical components for health and industrial applications; and environmental benefits.

A key aspect to our Applied Plant Science major is design flexibility; there are many opportunities for you to choose electives and courses based on your academic interests and career goals. As a student in our program, you will gain a solid background in biology, chemistry, math, plant biology, and genetics. You will also gain in-depth knowledge in one of three emphasis areas available to choose from. These areas include:

  • Plant Improvement
  • Agroecology
  • Plant Utilization.

Aside from a flexible program that fits your interests and career goals, our Applied Plant Science major features:

  • first-rate advising and counseling by faculty mentors
  • research internships
  • opportunities for international travel and study
  • academic scholarships
  • opportunities to learn through experience and as part of a team
  • development of leadership and communication skills
  • opportunities for socializing with other undergraduate students, faculty, and graduate students.
