Program Description
Animal Science students enjoy a broad and flexible curriculum that involves training in both the basic and applied biological sciences as related to domesticated animals.

Award winning faculty guide and advise students in learning about animal breeding, growth, nutrition, physiology, health, behavior, management, welfare,  production and food products.  Students can also develop skills in clinical and laboratory procedures, critical and ethical thinking, as well as verbal and written communication.

On-campus animal facilities provide hands-on opportunities to work with a variety of animal species, such as dairy and beef cattle, sheep, hogs and poultry both in class and outside the classroom. In addition, companion animal and equine courses offer several opportunities to learn directly about these animals through class demonstrations and workshops.
Students in the Animal Science major select one of three areas of emphasis, depending upon their career path:

  • Pre-Vet Emphasis (with options in basic science or biotechnology)
  • Production Emphasis
  • Industry Emphasis

Animal Science graduates are well prepared for careers in industry, government, the non-profit sector and education.  Students can also prepare for advanced degrees within veterinary medicine, human medical schools, animal related fields, as well as other health-based disciplines and life sciences.

VetFAST Program
If you are interested in veterinary medicine, you should consider our VetFAST Program (Veterinary Food Animal Scholars Program). The University developed this unique program to meet the high demand for veterinarians trained to work with food production animals, such as dairy and beef cattle, swine, poultry, sheep, and goats. VetFAST can allow you to get an admissions decision by the University's College of Veterinary Medicine at the end of your first year in college rather than your junior or senior year. This enables you to complete your pre-veterinary studies in three years instead of the typical four, saving you an entire year! In addition, you are exempt from taking the Graduate Record Exam (G.R.E.) and benefit from mentorships with veterinary faculty and students. In VetFAST, you can also participate in summer veterinary and industry work opportunities, research projects, and internships.
