3. Cloquet Alumni & Friends Day
Saturday, September 6, 2008 Cloquet Forestry Center; Cloquet, Minnesota You are invited to a fun-filled day at the 3,400 acre Cloquet Forestry Center - Minnesota's oldest forest reserved for research and education. There will be tours of forestry and wildlife research, a wonderful barbecue dinner, and a keynote presentation. 4. CFANS Alumni Tailgate Breakfast
Join the CFANS Alumni Society for a breakfast tailgate before the Gophers play Florida Atlantic on Saturday, September 20th! The CFANS group will be meeting 9am until game time at 11am at a U of M
tailgating lot on Portland and Washington Avenue before the game for
socializing, networking and morning breakfast (rolls, juice and
coffee). There are some great seats and family packages available for

5. CFANS Homecoming Tickets
The College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences Alumni Society has reserved a section of seats for the Gophers vs. Northwestern Homecoming Football Game on Saturday, November 1.
The game is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. (subject to change) at the

7. Clovia Bazaar, A Fixture On Campus
St. Paul Campus Student Center Ballroom, St. Paul Friday, October 17, 9 A.M. - 5:30 P.M. Saturday, October 18, 10 A.M. - 1 P.M.
The biennial Clovia Bazaar is scheduled to be back on campus on October 17 and 18! CFANS students, faculty, and staff are invited to visit the St. Paul Campus Student Center Ballroom for the array of merchandise produced andprepared by Clovia alumni.The proceeds provide cooperative housing and scholarships for current Clovia women.

9. Campus News
As part of the U of M's first Welcome Week,
325 incoming CFANS freshmen spent Thursday, Aug. 28, on the St. Paul
campus learning about the college and getting to know each other. Part
of the day's activities included an "Amazing Race"-style competition
where teams earned points in events like egg-tossing, setting up
camping tents or guessing the number of seeds in a bottle.
For the second year in a row a CFANS student will serve the state’s dairy industry as Princess Kay of the Milky Way. Kristy Mussman, an applied economics major, was crowned in ceremonies at the Minnesota State Fair on August 20th. In addition to Mussman, three other finalists for the Princess Kay title are students in CFANS. Megan Reeck is a junior majoring in applied plant sciences and was one of three contestants to win a $500 scholarship, Brenda Reiter is a sophomore majoring in animal science/pre-vet and Laura Weisz is a freshman in animal science this fall. On the day that it announced another record year of giving by donors, the University of Minnesota Foundation named L. Steven Goldstein as its new president and CEO, effective immediately. He replaces Gerald B. Fischer, who is stepping down after 18 years in the position. [more]
Dr. Sally Noll, poultry extension and researcher at the University of Minnesota, is the 2008 recipient of the National Turkey Federation (NTF) Research Award for her excellence in providing the turkey industry with science-based, practical solutions for turkey production. The award was presented to Noll at the 2008 Poultry Science Association’s (PSA) Annual Meeting in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. |
10. Alumni & Friends News
Robert E. Lyons has been awarded the an Outstanding Achievement Award. The award is the highest nondegree award conferred upon distinguished alumni by the University of Minnesota. After earning his MS (1979) and Ph.D. (1981) in Horticulture from the University of Minnesota, Robert E. Lyons has integrated his knowledge, talents and passion for horticulture and photography to create a stellar career. Positions at Virginia Tech and North Carolina State University helped prepare him for his current role as Professor and Director of the Longwood Graduate Program in Public Horticulture at the University of Delaware and Longwood Gardens.
Jenna Kromann, '08 Ag Ed, has taken as position as Outreach Program Assistant at the University of Minnesota Alumni Association.
Christine Yaeger,
'06 Environment and Natural Resources, spent two years sampling,
analyzing, and writing about water quality for the U.S. Geological
Survey in Mounds View, MN and in the University of Minnesota Civil
Engineering Department. She just joined the North Central Region SARE (Sustainable
Agriculture Research and Education) program at the University of
Minnesota as their Principal Office and Administrative Specialist.
Keith Olander, '94 Ag Ed, '06 MEd, has accepted a new position as a
Farm Business Management instructor at Central Lakes College in Staples
beginning September 2. Prior to this, he taught agriculture sciences
for 6 years at Long Prairie Grey Eagle High School. Keith lives in
live in Staples with his wife Denise and three children.
Jim Carlson, '93 Ag Ed, will begin a new position at CHS this
September in potash product management. Jim will also temporarily
manage both anhydrous ammonia and potash positions until we name a
replacement anhydrous ammonia manager.
Rob Moline, '92 Applied Economics was recently appointed Senior Risk Management Officer for AgStar Financial Services in Mankato, MN. Rob will be working primarily with crop insurance in the counties that the Mankato Office services.

11. In Memory
Internationally respected University of Minnesota economist Vernon Ruttan
died August 18th after a short illness at age 84. Ruttan, a Regents
Professor Emeritus in the applied economics and economics departments,
was widely known for his work in economic development, agricultural and
resource economics, and science and technology policy. He officially
retired from the university in 2000 but continued his research and
writing, maintaining an office at the university until just before his
death.
One of the college’s most passionate advocates, alumni and supporters has died while attending the 2008 Olympics in China. Todd Bachman, his wife Barbara, and their Chinese tour guide were attacked while visiting a popular tourist site in Beijing. Todd and Barbara have had a long and vibrant relationship with the University of Minnesota.

It's football season again and the talk of the town is the new home to Gopher football: TCF Bank Stadium!
On September 12, 2009, a new era will begin for University of Minnesota Golden Gopher football when kickoff in TCF Bank Stadium™
will return football to the Twin Cities campus. For the first time in
28 years, the sounds, sights, and excitement of Big Ten football will
resound across campus, new game-day traditions will be born, and a
sense of pride will be felt among Gopher fans everywhere. When
completed, the bowl will consist of 95,000 lineal feet of pre-cast
concrete and 97% of the nearly 9,000 tons of steel used in the structure
will be from recycled steel, most of which is made in Minnesota. The
TCF Bank Stadium is seeking LEED Certification to make the stadium the most
environmentally friendly and first green sports facility in the country.
