Jay Bell H. T. Morse Distinguished Teaching Professor Associate Dean of Academic Programs and Faculty Affair
I was born and raised in Blacksburg, Virginia and spent much of my youth hiking and fishing in Southern Appalachian Mountains. I received my B.S. and M.S. degree in Agronomy from Virginia Tech and moved on to work in surface mine reclamation research in far southwestern Virginia for four years. After my wife and I started our family, we moved north where I completed my doctorate in Soil Science at the Pennsylvania State University in 1990. I joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota as an assistant professor in January of 1991. I have lived and worked internationally in Australia and Morocco and developed a research and teaching program focusing on the ecology of wetland soils, soil geomorphology, and applications of geographic information science to problems of soil mapping. I have taught courses in soil conservation, geographic information science, soil genesis landscape relations, wetland soils, introduction to environmental science, and soils and geology field trips around the upper Midwest. My passion always has been and will always be teaching. I find working with students and programs for our students to be the most exciting and rewarding aspects of my time here at the University of Minnesota.
I assumed the duties of Associate Dean in July of 2007. This position presents many challenges as well as many opportunities to help our college serve our students in the most effective way possible. We have a very talented staff in student services and they are a joy to work with on a daily basis.
Aside from my duties at the University I enjoy traveling with my wife, fishing and backpacking, snowshoeing, playing the guitar and ballroom dancing. I have two sons that I love to spend time with and enjoy taking long walks with our Golden Retriever.

Email: afreder@umn.edu Phone: 612-624-6242 Carrie Jastram Academic AdvisorCarrie grew up in Sioux Falls, SD and graduated from Lincoln Senior High School. After high school, she dabbled with college and work in order to explore and understand her strengths and interests. In 1998, she transferred to the U of M from the University of South Dakota (go ‘yotes!) and has been here ever since as a student and/or employee. She enjoys the resources this big city and big 10 campus can offer, yet is amazed at the small town feeling it has once you get here.
As an undergrad, Carrie completed a BA degree in English with a History minor in hopes of becoming a high school English teacher. After spending time in a classroom, she decided to bypass the high school scene and pursued a M.Ed. degree in Adult Education with a certificate in Human Resource Development, which allows her to focus on adult learning and development in a post-secondary setting – like higher education or the workplace. She’s currently working on a Ph.D. degree in the same field, and is nearly finished with the coursework in her program.
As an employee, Carrie serves as an academic adviser in the Department of Food Science and Nutrition. Her previous positions at the U have been in the College of Education & Human Development, Office Human Resources, and the Medical School. In these roles, she’s been fortunate to build many relationships across campus, which allows her to keep in touch with current happenings. She’s also been fortunate to build her internal database of University facts and has been known to throw around ‘random’ trivia from time to time.
As an adviser, she enjoys working with freshmen as they experience their first year at the U of M. She also enjoys working with all students who are in need of something ‘extra’ to augment their academic pursuits, but aren’t sure what to do or where to turn. Whether it’s academic support, intercultural experiences (international or domestic), electives, majors, minors, or whatever – she has yet to see two students share the same experience. This is why she strives to approach each student appointment as uniquely as the student. In return, she expects students to understand their role in the process and enjoys helping them discover and tap into their strengths so they can be confident in the decisions and goals they make along the way.
