New Technologies for Full Carbon Accounting on Developed Lands

Amount:  $278,233
Leads:  Joseph P. McFadden - Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior; and Marvin E. Bauer - Department of Forest Resources

Description:
The ability to develop accurate material budgets is central to any analysis of the ecological or the societal costs and benefits of new energy sources, energy-efficient technologies, or land management practices to mitigate emissions from carbon-based energy sources.

The researchers will quantify the full carbon budget of a developed landscape using a novel technique based on the simultaneous measurement of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide fluxes, the latter being used as a tracer of the CO2 that originates from fuel combustion. They will verify their method by developing a monthly, high spatial resolution inventory of ecological and energy-use carbon exchange from satellite-based maps of the landscape and GIS databases of traffic counts and natural gas usage data from Xcel Energy.

Finally, the researchers will integrate the carbon flux component data using a flux source-area model in combination with the spatial databases to construct a full carbon budget for the study area. This information will provide a unique data set for the future development of carbon exchange models that would permit extrapolation to the statewide scale.
