Freshman applicants are students who are graduating from high school in the spring of 2008, regardless of any previously completed college credits while in high school. High school graduates who did not enroll in a post-secondary institution after completing their high school education are also considered freshmen.
How do you apply for Scholarships?
You are considered for most University of Minnesota and College academic scholarships when you apply for admission some scholarships require a separate application). Priority consideration for scholarships is given to students who submit the admission application by the December 15 priority application deadline. Those who apply after that date will be considered on a funds-available basis. It is unlikely that any scholarship funds will be available for qualified applicants who apply after December 15. For more information about the admissions process call 1-800-752-1000 or visit the Office of Admissions.
How are recipients selected?
Once the Office of Admissions office receives your admission application and verifies your admittance, your application is forwarded to the College for review. A copy may also be forwarded to the academic department in which you expressed an interest.
The Scholarship Committee selects recipients based on criteria established by the sponsors of each scholarship. Many scholarships are awarded on the basis of scholastic achievement, consistency of academic record, ACT/SAT scores and extracurricular and leadership activities. There is no need to apply for specific scholarships. The committee will screen applications and make decisions based on information submitted.
How will I be notified?
You will receive a letter from the Office of Admissions in mid-March that tells you what scholarship(s) you have been awarded. If you have also applied for financial aid (completed the FAFSA), you will receive a second letter in mid-April that outlines your complete financial aid package including grants, scholarships, loans, expected parental contribution, etc.
If I don't receive a scholarship as an incoming freshman, are there other opportunities to apply?
The College annually awards scholarships to current students each spring for the following academic year. You would be eligible to apply for these scholarships each year assuming you are a full-time student in good academic standing.
