Marshall Stern

Marshall Stern is a Professor of Ruminant Nutrition in the Department of Animal Science. His areas of interests emphasize protein nutrition of ruminants including methodology for measuring protein degradation and microbial protein synthesis in the rumen, and protein absorption from the small intestine. He also studies various factors that affect fermentation and microbial populations in the rumen. Dr. Stern’s teaching responsibilities include Companion Animal Nutrition and Care, Animal Nutrition, and Ruminant Nutrition. He has won numerous teaching awards at the university, including the Horace T. Morse Award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education in 2006. His national teaching awards include honors from the American Society of Animal Science and the American Dairy Science Association. Dr. Stern holds degrees from Cornell University (B.S.1972), University of Rhode Island (M.S. 1974) and University of Maine (Ph.D. 1977).
