Honorary Degree
The Honorary Degree is the highest award conferred by the University of Minnesota to an individual who has achieved acknowledged eminence in cultural affairs, in public service, or in a field of knowledge and scholarship.

Outstanding Achievement Award
The Outstanding Achievement Award is the highest award the University presents to one of its alumni who has attained unusual distinction in his/her chosen field or profession or public service.

Dean E.M. Freeman Medal
Dean E. M. Freeman was director of resident instruction (dean) for 26 years. The prestigious Dean E. M. Freeman Medal is given in appreciation and as a community statement recognizing the importance of an individual's truly outstanding contributions.

Little Red Oil Can
One of the oldest and most cherished traditions on the St. Paul Campus is the awarding of the "Little Red Oil Can." It was first given to Dean E. M. Freeman in 1916. It is recorded that he often forgot that a Model T Ford consumed gasoline. At an assembly in 1916, the Sophomore Class presented a red oil can to keep filled for frequent emergencies.
