Energy from Grass: Integrating Directed Class Research with Additional Research Topics

Benefits and Deliverables:
  • The researchers will produce a detailed report analyzing the production economics of native prairie grasses, transportation and logistics costs of native prairie grass production, the potential for land recruitment and integration with existing government programs that encourage native prairies, and identification of methods to reduce transactions costs of biomass fuels versus fossil fuels. Additional research will be conducted on the economics of the pyrolysis process to sell chemicals and fuels from bio-oils derived from native prairie grasses including switchgrass in Minnesota and the Dakotas.
  • Provide copies of the report to regional state legislators through the Legislator's Forum and other interested parties such as the regional Nature Conservancy, wildlife groups, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, various regional environmental groups, state farm bureaus, the farmers' union, industry groups, commodity groups, and government and elected officials.
Description:
The researchers will seek to integrate and supplement economic and policy research related to production and utilization of native prairie grasses for bio-fuels and product development in the Northern Great Plains.
