Donald Liu It is the nurturing of the mind, the empowering of the young, and the challenge of trying to be a better teacher every day that makes teaching such a fulfilling and pleasurable activity."
Donald Liu’s "high tech/high touch" teaching style has earned him the reputation as one of the most engaging professors at the University.
On the high tech side, Liu’s innovative use of personal response system (PRS) clickers (handheld transmitters that students use to respond to quizzes and submit comments) helps keep students actively engaged in class. He has also developed marketing simulation exercises in which students use the clickers to make transactions.
One student commented, "The PRS ensures that we are not left clueless on a topic. I left every class competent on the materials that had been covered."
On the high touch side, Liu is known for his ability to remember the first names of all his 280 students by the end of the semester’s first week. He includes time for discussion and encourages expression of diverse points of view.
A student observed, "My opinions on many topics differed from Professor Liu’s, yet I always felt he encouraged me and others to express our ideas freely without reservation."
Liu is also a tireless adviser to students, regularly supervising internships and study projects for his advisees.
A student wrote, "Professor Liu’s willingness to help and his respect for students is unparalleled. I undoubtedly know that my success in the class can be largely attributed to his aid."
