Admission Requirements for Current University of Minnesota Students

Admission to the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences is competitive and based on an overall assessment of the applicant's academic record and potential for success in their designated major. Primary review factors include cumulative grade point average and grades in math, sciences, and in coursework related to the major.

General Guidelines:

  • All students must have completed a minimum of Intermediate Algebra at the college level; e.g. PSTL 0731 or equivalent at another college or university.
  • Students should demonstrate a strong foundation in math and science courses.  This means Bs in most science and math courses or a record demonstrating an improving grade trend.
  • Transfer students must be in good academic standing and have a minimum of 2.00 cumulative GPA to be eligible to apply for admission. A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 is preferred. If applicants have less than the preferred GPA, they must demonstrate relevant additional experience or an ability to contribute something unique to be considered for admission.

Specific Major Admission Guidelines:

Applied Economics and Pre-Agricultural and Food Business Mgmt:
  • Applicants must have completed college algebra with a grade of C or higher and must have completed microeconomics or macroeconomics with a grade of B- or higher. 
Agricultural and Food Business Mgmt:
  • Students are admitted to the major after satisfactory completion of a pre-agricultural and food business management program. Admission standards are developed in conjunction with the Carlson School of Management. Application deadlines are April 15 for fall semester and October 15 for spring semester.
To be considered for admission to the major (not the pre-major), students must meet the following pre-programrequirements:
Complete or have in progress coursework to total 60 credits by the time of admission.
Complete the following management “tool” courses on an A-F grading basis before entering the program:

-Acct 2050
-ApEc 1101, 1102 or Econ 1101, 1102
-OMS 2550
-Math 1142 or Math 1271
  • Earn a GPA of at least 2.80 in all coursework.
  • Earn a GPA of at least 2.50 in the tool courses with grades of C- or better.
Nutrition:
  • Most successful applicants must have completed one semester of inorganic chemistry with lab with a grade of C- or better.
  • Most successful applicants must have completed one semester or one quarter of biology with lab with a grade of C- or better.
  • Prefer a Cumulative GPA of 2.8 or above.

Deadline for fall 2008: March 8th

Deadline for spring 2009: October 8th
