Appropriate advising is essential to finding resources regarding your major and meeting your career interests at the college. Find an advisor you are comfortable working with and schedule regular advising appointments.
Changing advisors within your major is easy.
Students generally seek to change advisors for the following reasons:
- they have met an advisor in their major who has interests more closely aligned with their own professional and academic interests,
- they are changing majors and need an advisor in their new major, or
- they simply find a different advisor a better match for personal reasons.
Students planning to change advisors in their major should begin by speaking to either the major coordinator in the major, contacting the College office or speaking with a potential faculty advisor to see if they advise undergraduates. Stop by the College office at 190 Coffey Hall and visit with the Student Services staff. We can help you identify an adviser that suits your interest.
Faculty advisers are always glad when a student is able to find an advisor who serves them best. Take time to get to know the advising faculty in your major and insure that the advisor you are working with can help you meet your goals.
To change your advisor:
- Go to the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences Student Services Office to pick up a Change of Major/Advisor form.
- Visit with the coordinator of your major and have him/her sign the form assigning you a new advisor.
- Return the signed form to the College Student Services office so that we can complete the change on your official University of Minnesota student record.
