Changing Your Major

Your first choice of a major in the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences may not suit you as your interests develop and you discover all that the college has to offer.

Students will sometimes find that a different major better suits them -- particularly as they learn more about various fields and career opportunities. If you are considering a change of major to another major within the College please note the steps outlined below.

Changing Majors within the College

Students planning to change majors to another major offered by the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences should begin by researching the new major. Stop by the College Office at 190 Coffey Hall and visit with the Student Services staff.

We will help you identify a major that satisfies your abilities and interests. We will also provide you with contact information to faculty in the major for further exploration.

To change your major:

  1. Make an appointment with an advising faculty member in the major you are interested in. Discuss issues and concerns you may have about admission to the major and course requirements. (Some majors do have additional GPA, course, or portfolio entrance requirements you must satisfy before you are eligible for admission.)

  2. Go to the College Student Services office to pick up a Change of Major form.

  3. Visit with the coordinator of the new major and have him/her sign the form and assign an advisor for you in the new major.

  4. Return the signed form to the College Student Services office so that we can complete the change on your official University of Minnesota record. We will also contact you within two weeks and ask you to pick-up (at 190 Coffey Hall) a new APAS report listing your remaining requirements for your new major.

Changing to a Major in a different University of Minnesota Twin Cities college or coordinate campus

Students seeking to change to a major in a different college at the University of Minnesota or one of the coordinate campuses, should visit with the department offering the prospective major and request information on how best to apply.

You must be admissible to the college offering the major.  If you are admissible, you will need to submit a Change of College form (available at the Office of the Registrar or download the form directly from University Forms Online) and meet the admission application deadlines.

Notes
Identifying a major that can help you satisfy your personal and career goals is an essential step to attaining your goals at the University of Minnesota.  The course choices you make -- the faculty you interact with, and recruiters you interview with -- are connected to the decision of your major. Be sure you find a solid fit with your interests.
