Algae project gets 150K boost
Xcel Energy has given a $150,000 gift to the University of Minnesota that builds on both organizations' commitment to renewable energy in Minnesota. Of particular interest is a groundbreaking algae-to-biofuels project led by CFANS scientist Roger Ruan.

CFANS biofuels research gets $2.7 million
Five renewable energy projects -- three of them from CFANS -- led by University of Minnesota researchers have been selected to receive more than $4.5 million from the Xcel Energy Renewable Development Fund. The CFANS projects total about $2.7 million.

'MN150' honors CFANS professor
CFANS professor L. David Mech is one of the people, places and things honored in the Minnesota Historical Society's MN150 exhibit. Mech is recognized for his work with wolves.

Alumni Association recognizes volunteers
The CFANS Alumni Society was recognized this fall as the University of Minnesota Alumni Association's "Outstanding Alumni Society of the Year." Past president Dan Kennedy is the UMAA's national outstanding volunteer of the year and CFANS professor Mark Seeley is the faculty/staff volunteer of the year.

What's happening to the bees?
CFANS scientist Marla Spivak, a professor in the Department of Entomology, was interviewed Sunday on "60 Minutes" as part of a story about Colony Collapse Disorder affecting honeybees.

Polasky named AAAS Fellow
Stephen Polasky, a professor in the Department of Applied Economics, has been named a Fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Polasky  is one of seven University of Minnesota professors to earn the honor this year.

New home for Bell Museum planned for 2010
A new home for the Bell Museum of Natural History will be part of the university's proposed bonding request to the 2008 Minnesota Legislature. This week, the university’s Board of Regents reviewed and approved schematic designs for a new $36 million public facility on the St. Paul campus.

Construction of the museum will begin in 2008, with a projected completion date of 2010.

Solutions magazine is online
The Fall 2007 issue of Solutions, CFANS' three-times-a-year magazine, is arriving in mailboxes now. But the online version is already posted!

NSF grant will fund science study
CFANS is part of a statewide alliance that has received a $2.45 million grant over the next five years from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The grant will be used to participate in NSF's Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation program.

Plant Pathology celebrates centennial
CFANS' Department of Plant Pathology recently celebrated its 100 years as a department with social events, lectures and tours of the department facilities. Honored guests included some of the department's most distinguished alumni and  Gov. Tim Pawlenty declared Sept. 19 as Plant Pathology Day in Minnesota.

Listening sessions set for UMore Park

Symposium focuses on eliminating barriers
The second CFANS biofuels symposium, "Breaking the Barriers for Biomass Conversion – Challenges and Opportunities," is set for Sept. 19.
