Date Approved: 7/1/05
Amount: $50,000, matching grant for a USDA Higher Education Challenge grant $145,000
Lead: Shri Ramaswamy, Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering
Benefits and Deliverables:
- Improving the overall capabilities and resources at the
University of Minnesota in the areas of biomass characterization,
thermo-chemical and biochemical conversion of biomass, bio-based
products manufacturing, biomaterial characterization and effluent
characterization.
- Develop the capabilities and resources throughout the campus to
become a true "national center of excellence in renewable energy and
bio-based products."
- Contribute to a competent workforce for the existing and emerging bio-based products industry in Minnesota.
Description: In support of the development and implementation of the Bio-based Products Engineering Laboratory as part of the overall education, research and training at the University of Minnesota, the faculty and staff from the Department of Bio-based Products, Biosystems and Agriculture Engineering and Biotechnology Institute are jointly submitting a proposal to the U.S. Department of Agriculture as part of a Higher Education Challenge grant. Specifically the joint proposal seeks to augment laboratory capabilities and resources in the general areas of biomass characterization, biochemical conversion, thermochemical conversion, effluent characterization, bio-based products manufacturing and products characterization. In addition to undergraduate and graduate training, augmented laboratory facilities will significantly enhance the capability of faculty and staff across the University of Minnesota in conducting research in the bio-based arena. The University of Minnesota is the first university in the world to develop a comprehensive educational and research program centrally focused on the materials, energy and products from renewable resources. This provides a unique opportunity to be a leader at the forefront of the emerging bioeconomy.
