Does eating plants make you healthier? (9/27/2010)
This week's Healthy Foods, Healthy Lives symposium will present emerging scientific research that adds new insight into just how important these plants are for human health – and why. Leading scientists will give updates on their latest research and case studies on what factors can help motivate people to improve their health by eating more plants. Featured speaker will be New York Times food writer and author Mark Bittman.
Diouf receives honorary U degree (9/24/2010)
Jacques Diouf, director-general of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), was honored with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Minnesota on Sept. 23. The degree is the highest honor conferred by the university. We've posted a photo album from the event on the CFANS Facebook page and you can read the text of his speech.
Hutchison to lead entomology department (9/21/2010)
William Hutchison has been appointed head of the Department of Entomology, where he has been a professor and Extension entomologist since 1989. His research-based outreach program includes a landscape-level, systems approach to integrated pest management (IPM) that assists Midwest vegetable and grape growers, sweet corn processors, and crop consultants in making pest management decisions. He has received several awards for outstanding service and leadership, including the 2007 Distinguished Achievement Award in Extension, Entomological Society of America. He replaces David Ragsdale, who accepted a position as head of the entomology department at Texas A&M University.
Grant will help build biomass policy recommendations (9/15/2010)
Thanks to a new grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, CFANS scientists will evaluate how biomass production options would affect the Mississippi River watershed and use the results to make policy recommendations for increasing the sustainability of the bio-energy industry. The five-year project is led by assistant professors Jason Hill of the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering and Tracy Twine of the Department of Soil, Water and Climate.
Welcome to campus, class of 2014! (9/1/2010)
This week about 320 new CFANS freshmen will be getting settled on campus. They'll take part in Welcome Week, a university-wide program designed to provide students with opportunities to enhance their academic and personal success, and to give them an edge on starting their college education. Classes begin for all students on Tuesday, Sept. 7.
