Campuses:
Around the world in 42 years (2/18/2010)
Retired plant pathology professor Thor Kommedahl, 89, has achieved his lifetime goal: he ran nearly 25,000 miles, or the same distance as the equator. He'll be honored at a party at the St. Paul Gym on Friday. He started his journey in the 1960s and finished last Friday on the gym's running track.
Morocco, reinvigorated (2/18/2010)
For more than 30 years, the University of Minnesota led an international initiative to train professors at the Institute of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine, Hassan II and the National Schools of Agriculture and Forestry in Morocco. The unique partnership consisted of the Kingdom of Morocco building the campuses along with the collaboration of more than 25 land-grant universities in the United States training a generation of professors. The partnership is often cited as a rare success.
Save the Date: "Turning Plans into Action" (2/17/2010)
Over the past two years, a dedicated group of faculty, staff, students and alumni have been working on a major redefinition of the undergraduate experience in CFANS. They’ve studied what works well in other places, talked about what’s appropriate for this college and dreamed big about the possibilities. Now, it's time to begin turning those plans into action. Join college leaders for a discussion about undergraduate education and the future of CFANS on Friday, Feb. 26 at the St. Paul Student Center.
Minnesota legacy: Saving the world's wheat and food supplies (2/17/2010)
"Bringing Science to the People: Minnesota's Incomparable Legacy in Saving the World's Wheat," will be presented by author Susan Dworkin, author of the new book "The Viking in the Wheat Field." The book tells the story of how CFANS alumnus Bent Skovmand spent his career collecting and documenting thousands of wheat varieties so that they would be safe from disease and climate stress. Before his death in 2007, Skovmand founded the Svalbard International Seed Vault, also called the "Doomsday Vault," to preserve seeds in case of worldwide disaster.
Dworkin's lecture, followed by a panel discussion with CFANS plant pathologists, will be from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 4, in the Cargill Building on the St. Paul campus. She'll also sign books at the Coffman Memorial Union bookstore on the Minneapolis campus from 4 to 5 p.m. March 3.
