New arboretum director named (3/29/2010)
Edward L. SchneiderThe Minnesota Landscape Arboretum will welcome a new director this summer; he is Edward L. Schneider, currently president and CEO of the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden in California. He will be the Arboretum's fourth director since it was founded nearly 52 years ago.
Before joining the Santa Barbara garden in 1992, Schneider was a member of the Texas State University faculty, most recently as dean of the College of Science for more than eight years.

Fungi can attack in unexpected ways

TomatoesThe disease attacking your tomato plants this summer may have migrated from a completely unrelated fungus, according to a new study from the Department of Plant Pathology, published last week in the journal Nature. The study found that fungi are more adaptable than previously thought and may "horizontally" transfer genes. The process is similar to the way bacteria quickly develop antibiotic resistance or obtain toxins.

2010 Siehl Prize laureates announced

A tireless promoter of soybeans, the leader of one of Minnesota’s best-known food companies and a world-renowned scientist and teacher at the University of Minnesota are this year’s recipients of the prestigious Siehl Prize For Excellence in Agriculture.

The annual award by CFANS honors recipients in three categories: knowledge (teaching, research and outreach); production agriculture and agribusiness. This year’s winners are Sander "Sandy" Ludeman (production agriculture), Donald Helgeson (agribusiness), and Ronald Phillips (knowledge).

United Nations food and ag leader: research saves lives (3/8/2010)
Director General of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations Jacques DioufOn a recent visit to the University of Minnesota, Jacques Diouf, Director-General of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, spoke about the importance of agriculture and food security in developing countries and how critical agricultural research will be in coming decades.

Minnesota's food industry: Bigger than we thought? (3/4/2010)
Minnesota has long been known for its food industry and leadership in the areas of flour milling, grain shipping and food processing. But just how big is the industry? Researchers from CFANS now know the answer. A new report from The Food Industry Center found 2,357 food companies in the state, not counting Minnesota’s more than 81,000 farms.
