CFANS alumni, faculty and staff are among the University's most successful and distinguished. They include Nobel laureates, national academy members, leaders in government and industry, and pioneering entrepreneurs. Many have been recognized by the University with Outstanding Achievement Awards and Honorary Degrees.
Assistant professor Jason Hill of the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering has been chosen as one of six new University of Minnesota McKnight Land-Grant professors. The program is aimed at advancing the careers of promising junior faculty at a critical point in their professional lives. Recipients hold the title for two years and receive a research grant in each of those years and a research leave in the second year.
Regents Professor Peter Reich of the Department of Forest Resources has been named a 2011 Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, where he'll join some of the world's most accomplished leaders from academia, business, public affairs, the humanities, and the arts. The Society's members have included influential Americans down through the ages in the arts, humanities and sciences.
Two CFANS professors are recipients of the university's Outstanding Contributions to Postbaccalaureate, Graduate, and Professional Education Award: Ralph Holzenthal, left, Department of Entomology and Ray Newman, right, Department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology. Along with six other recipients from across the university, they were honored on April 25 at a ceremony in McNamara Alumni Center.

Assistant professors Chengyan Yue, left, and Brian Aukema, right, have been selected as McKnight-Land Grant professors for 2011-13. Yue, of the departments of horticultural science and applied economics, specializes in horticultural marketing. Aukema, of the Department of Entomology, studies forest entomology. The McKnight Land-Grant program is aimed at advancing the careers of the University of Minnesota's most promising junior faculty.
Entomologist Marla Spivak has been named one of 23 recipients of the 2010 "genius grants" from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Spivak, a nationally and internationally respected expert on honeybees' health is developing practical applications to protect honeybee populations from decimation by disease while making fundamental contributions to the understanding of bee biology. This is only the second time in University of Minnesota history that a member of the faculty has won this award.
Harry M. Kaiser has been awarded the 2008-09 Outstanding Achievement Award. Since Kaiser received his Ph.D. in Agricultural and Applied Economics from the University of Minnesota in 1985, the primary focus of his research has been on the social implications of agricultural demand and supply policies aimed at improving producers’ welfare. Kaiser has also worked in the area of experimental economics with an emphasis on the private provision of public goods, and was involved with some of the first research that investigated the economic impacts of climate change on the U.S. agricultural sector.
Horace T. Morse Award
CFANS is proud to announce that Albert "Bud" Markhart and John P. Loegering were each awarded the Morse Award for the 2008-2009 school year! Each spring, the University of Minnesota Alumni Association presents the Morse-Alumni Teaching Award to an outstanding teacher for excellence in contributing directly and indirectly to students. The award is presented at the Distinguished Teaching Awards Ceremony in April.
Graduate/Professional Teaching Award
Terry Roe, a professor with the Department of Applied Economics has received the 2008-2009 Graduate-Professionals Award! This award is given annually to faculty members for outstanding contributions to post baccalaureate, graduate and professional education.
John Tate Award
Applied Economics Undergraduate Program Coordinator Gary Cooper has received the 2008 John Tate Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising! The John Tate Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising is named in honor of John Tate, Professor of Physics and first Dean of University College (1930-41). The Tate Awards serve to recognize and reward high-quality academic advising.
Wolf Prize
University Regents Professor of Agronomy and Plant Genetics Ron Phillips has received the coveted 2007 Wolf Prize in Agriculture. In 1976 German philanthropist Ricardo Wolf established the annual award for agriculture, chemistry, mathematics, medicine, physics, and the arts.
Honorary Degree
The Honorary Degree is the highest award conferred by the University of Minnesota to an individual who has achieved acknowledged eminence in cultural affairs, in public service, or in a field of knowledge and scholarship.
