Alum will lead international food research agency (11/18/2009)

Shenggen Fan1Department of Applied Economics alumnus Shenggen Fan, right, as been selected as the next director general of IFPRI, the International Food Policy Research Institute. Another department alumnus, Ruben Echeverría, earlier this year became director general of the International Center for Tropical Agriculture, a sister agency to IFPRI under the umbrella of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research. Both men were first hired at the international agricultural agencies by Phil Pardey -- now a professor in the department, who was formerly a senior research fellow at IFPRI.  

New project brings together research on sustainability of forest biomass (11/18/2009)

A $2.7 million grant from the federal departments of energy and agriculture will fund research into the long-term viability and sustainability of harvesting forest biomass for fuel. Lead investigator Tony D'Amato of the Department of Forest Resources says the grant brings together ongoing research throughout the northern lakes states, for a comprehensive and regional assessment.

Forests are a treasure trove of limbs and bark that can be made into alternative fuels and some worry the increasing trend of using that logging debris will make those materials too scarce, harming the woodlands... Researchers led by University of Minnesota forest expert Dennis Becker reported this summer that many would-be investors are uneasy about supplies of waste wood.
