Polasky elected to National Academy of Sciences (4/27/2010)
Department of Applied Economics professor Stephen Polasky has been elected a member of the prestigious National Academy of Sciences. He is one of 72 new members and 18 foreign associates from 14 countries who were elected Tuesday in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.
On Earth Day, a garden is reborn (4/26/2010)
In honor of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, six Environment House living and learning community members helped volunteers clean up the Peace Garden of Murray Junior High School. They pulled out weeds and planted the flowers donated by the Department of Horticultural Science. They also planted three trees (courtesy of the Department of Forest Resources) in front of the school.
Ag Awareness Day brings farm to the city (4/20/2010)
Students from the Ag Ed Club organized the April 20 "Ag Awareness Day" on the Northrop Mall on the U of M's Minneapolis campus. Organizer Caitlin Kasper talks about the event in this YouTube video.
The event was aimed at raising awareness of how food, fiber and renewable resource products are produced and showcase the critical role agriculture plays in maintaining a strong economy. A broad range of Minnesota agricultural producers, associations and government agencies joined the students in the project.
Learning about Africa, from the seat of a bicycle (4/1/2010)
Agronomy and Plant Genetics professor Paul Porter has returned to Africa to complete a journey begun last year. He's observing food and agriculture as he rides his bicycle across Africa and sharing what he's learned with a class back home through his blog.
